If you have already verified that your location is zoned correctly, you probably just need to get a sign permit so that you can hang your shingle and let people know where to find you. If you are unsure whether you need additional permits, contact the Zoning Administrator.

We have included information about some of the state permits you may need but please contact the relevant agency to determine specific requirements for your project. State building permits are handled by the Division of Fire Safety.
Be sure to leave plenty of time to figure out environmental permits such as flood hazards if you are changing the footprint of your facility – this is often the most challenging part of building expansion permitting. The Agency of Natural Resources Department of Environmental Conservation handles these permits at the state level. We recommend contacting their regional permit specialist, who can help you create a Project Review Sheet with the list of state permits needed for your project.

If you are building rental space, renovating rental space, or putting up a sign for your rental property, you will need permits from the Town of Northfield; the Zoning Administrator can help you figure out which ones.
